Contention Management – When “deterministic wireless” is not a marketing term

by Joel on December 8, 2009

Its amazing to see the WLAN market evolve and innovations flourish.  ”Deterministic” is not typically associated with 802.11 networks because by their very nature they’re based on random access (random backoff parameters).  But “Deterministic” is much more than a marketing term, its something that is the key to quality wireless communications.  Can 802.11 access ever be deterministic and still be Wi-Fi Certified?  In actuality, the deterministic nature of 802.11 can be improved without violating the standard and vastly improve the predictability of Wi-Fi Certified networks.

Contention Management if the basis of Meru’s innovation (Air Traffic Control technology) that create a reliable, predictable 802.11n platform to run applications like voice communications and video streaming along side traditional applications like email, file transfers, and database applications.  In these next two videos, Dr. Bharghavan explains how Air Traffic Control technology is able to improve predictability in an inherently unpredictable medium.
